Owner Spotlight: Sergio Cabanas
Hi, I’m Sergio Cabanas, proud Senior Attorney and Managing Partner of Divorce and Mediation Law Firm.
Today, I look forward to sharing my story. I hope that you will enjoy getting to know me better.
Without a doubt, the most enjoyable part of my work is achieving my client's objective of resolving their legal matter, and thereby improving their lives.
I am in business to help people in a special, meaningful way. When I was a child, I started seeing a physician for regular check-ups. He made me realize how important it was to learn special skills which can have a dramatic impact on people's lives. While I ultimately chose a career in law instead of medicine; my intent was the same. I acquired important knowledge and skills which I could apply in the service of making people’s lives better.
I was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico. I lived in many areas of the United States, including: New York, Los Angeles, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Texas, Georgia and Florida. I eventually graduated from college in Georgia. I obtained my law degree from the American University in Washington, DC.
I started my first business about 15 years ago in real estate. I opened a law practice 10 years ago. The law firm was established during the Great Recession and Housing Crisis. We offered debt relief services such as bankruptcy protection, loan modifications, foreclosure defense, debt defense and asset protection. Eventually I expanded the firm to other practice areas.
The most important responsibilities I have involve meeting with my clients to gather information about their legal issues. My next step is developing effective legal strategies and solutions. I attend court hearings or trials to argue cases and otherwise litigate our client's cases. I also meet with our law firm's attorneys to review the progress in other clients' cases and discuss strategies to resolve ongoing problems. My typical work day sees me fulfilling these primary responsibilities. I work about ten hours per day, in addition to one weekend per month.
As an attorney handling many legal matters, I am faced with numerous decisions everyday. Of course, most of the important decisions relate to the legal strategies being implemented on behalf of clients. The consequences often have profound impact on their lives. I take this responsibility very seriously.
The three top skills I rely upon to perform my job at the highest level are: (1) listening and understanding client's legal problems and needs; (2) developing the most effective legal strategy; (3) implementing the legal strategy on a timely and cost-effective basis.
The most compelling attribute to my success is.... persistence. Many people think that other qualities are more important; such as intelligence or education. Of course, these qualities help. But I've met many people in this profession who are brilliant and educated; yet are not successful. On the other hand, I’ve observed that the one quality that is consistent among successful people is persistence. They know how to overcome adversity to achieve their goals. "A river cuts through rock, not because of its power, but because of its persistence."
The most satisfying work moments for me are the small victories we see everyday in our law firm. We strive to achieve great things for our clients. As I write this, I just congratulated an elderly client (who is turning 79 years old tomorrow). We arranged a loan modification that helped him avoid foreclosure and saved his home. He was very grateful. This gave me enormous happiness and satisfaction.
The person who has had the most impact on my leadership style is my father. He came from Cuba with no money. He did not speak English. Despite these obstacles; he established a small business which became very successful. His most important leadership characteristic, and key to his success, was having the persistence to overcome resistance and adversity.
Apple, Inc., with Steve Jobs as the original CEO, is a company I admire. They broke from traditional business models to achieve better, more innovative products and services for their customers. I strive to achieve this same concept for my law firm and the legal profession.
I am a strong supporter of the American Cancer Association. I lost one beloved family member to cancer. Another who is battling against it now. I wear a pin everyday to remember their fight, in addition to sponsoring walks and charity drives in their honor.
Away from work I enjoy cooking gourmet meals for my family. Of course, this forces me to stay engaged with my next favorite hobby ... exercise! After my work day is done, I regularly attend spinning classes, lift weights, and practice yoga.
My most satisfying personal moments come being around and watching my two children.
My personal values consists of compassion, honesty, and achievement.
I have enjoyed sharing my story about the things which matter to me and how they influence the way I do business.
